May be

Once upon the time there was an old farmer who had worked his crops for many years. One day his horse ran away. Upon hearing the news, his neighbors came to visit. “Such bad luck,” they said sympathetically.

“Maybe,” the farmer replied.

The next morning the horse returned, bringing with it three other wild horses. “How wonderful,” the neighbors exclaimed.

“Maybe,” replied the old man.

The following day, his son tried to ride one of the untamed horses, was thrown, and broke his leg. The neighbors again came to offer their sympathy on his misfortune.

“Maybe,” answered the farmer.

The day after, military officials came to the village to draft young men into the army. Seeing that the son’s leg was broken, they passed him by. The neighbors congratulated the farmer on how well things had turned out.

“Maybe,” said the farmer.

My Thoughts: Accept whatever comes into your life, whether you expected or not. Live every moment. Buddha says "Accept the PAIN". Why should one accept the pain? Because you cannot avoid it. The only thing you can avoid is suffering from pain. Do not allow external world's happenings affect you.

  1. That's a cool story! I agree with your interpretation of it as well. I believe that you should try to enjoy every moment in life and for those negative and traumatizing situations, just find a way to cope with them. I don't really agree with accepting pain because you have to learn to overcome and surpass the pain. Figure out a solution to the problem instead of accepting and waiting. I agree with not allowing the world to affect you and you should do that with pain as well! (;

  2. Taney, you said, "I don't really agree with accepting pain because you have to learn to overcome and surpass the pain" - you just think deeply on these words of yours. Your words only speak about the suffering and not the PAIN. If someone hits you when you don't notice, you have already received the pain which you cannot avoid. The only thing that you can decide is to whether you want to suffer from that pain.

  3. Please only take what I'm saying as an opinion of mine. I have no intentions to make you believe or feel otherwise. Let me share my beliefs.

I perceive pain only as being mental. Even physically, I don't really feel that much pain. Maybe I have developed a numbness to it. I believe that pain only exists when you want it to exists. Everything is processed through your mind.

I used to work out at the gym a lot. When I get the pain from muscle fatigue, I just convince myself that "pain is weakness leaving the body." I still run and swim 4-5 times a week. It would be much more painful if I directed my attention to that pain.

If someone hits me and I don't notice. I'm definitely going to feel that pain, but how I feel within the next week or 2 is dependent to how I think and react to the situation. You're right about deciding whether or not to suffer. To suffer basically means to accept and feel the pain. I cannot accept the pain voluntarily.

Again, this is how I deal with pain. It might not be for everyone. I respect your opinion! I just wanted to share mine.

  4. From your conversation I understand what you are trying to say...I see only very little difference between what we two speak about.

I also want people who read this article also read http://become-positive.blogspot.com/2009/07/accept-pain.html (one of my blogs) to understand what I actually meant to communicate by the word "Accept the Pain".

  5. Yeah, I agree. I believe that pain and suffering is pretty much intertwined and we have different views of the definition of each. The difference between us seems like you want to accept it to move on; whereas I reject the whole idea.

I will check out your post about pain! Keep on writing! Expression of our ideas help us to understand each other. I think it's awesome! (=

  8. I want to make a suggestion. Have you ever considered just combining all your blogs together? It would be much more easier to navigate and plus your topics are similar enough to be in the same blog. It would be more user-friendly as well.

  9. I have 3 blogs currently as follows:

http://think-on-spirituals.blogspot.com talks only about spiritual thoughts. As I am impressed with Zen stories and many people think it as a piece of joke rather of thinking it as a story that awakens us. So I started with Zen stories and I am not going to stop here. In future this blog is going to explain each ritual practices and what you call superstitious belief or myths.

http://become-positive.blogspot.com/ talks about positive thinking. All spiritual thoughts speak about our inner world. People are depended on the external world as our bodily sensed make them do so. This is why my blog about positive thinking may seem content similar to spiritual thoughts but they are not always same. I may say positive thinking is very small subset of spiritual thinking. So I want them to be kept separately

http://humourous-thoughts.blogspot.com/ - Humorous Thoughts. This blog contain anything that brings humor. That may be foolish, thought provoking, or anything but humorous.
